Black Stone Ceramics

About Us

Black Stone Ceramics was born out of frustration. Our founder, Mitchel Donovan, spent years as a studio potter struggling with unreliable equipment suppliers; late deliveries, broken tools, and generic advice that didn’t solve real workshop problems.

In 2013, Mitch decided to take matters into their own hands. What started as a small operation supplying wheels and clay to a handful of local studios has since grown into a trusted online destination for potters nationwide. But we haven’t lost our roots. We remain a small, passionate team of ceramicists who test every product we sell, ensuring it meets our own high standards before it ever reaches your studio.

We’re not just a supplier. We’re potters, just like you

Our mission is simple: To empower potters of every skill level with reliable, durable, and professional-grade equipment that performs as hard as they do.

We understand that pottery is more than a hobby, it’s a discipline, a meditation, and for many, a livelihood. That’s why we refuse to compromise on quality. Every kiln we stock, every wheel we ship, and every bag of clay we deliver is carefully vetted to meet the demands of serious artisans.

We are committed to:

  • Quality First: We partner only with trusted manufacturers known for durability and precision.

  • Expert Guidance: Our team consists of experienced potters who understand your challenges and can recommend the right tools for your specific needs.

  • Community Support: We believe in growing the ceramics community by making equipment accessible, affordable, and backed by reliable customer service.

Our Commitment to Sustainability

We believe that creating art with earth-based materials carries a responsibility to protect the planet. That’s why we:

  • Source clays and materials from environmentally responsible quarries

  • Offer recycled and repurposed studio furniture options

  • Reduce packaging waste wherever possible

  • Encourage energy-efficient kiln practices to reduce firing costs and carbon footprint

We are proud to support a craft that is inherently sustainable—and we aim to keep it that way.

Black Stone Ceramics is more than a business; it’s a community hub. We regularly host:

  • Workshops & Webinars: Learn from master potters about throwing, glazing, and firing techniques.

  • Studio Tours: We feature customer studios on our blog to showcase diverse creative spaces.

  • Equipment Demos: Live demonstrations of new wheels, kilns, and tools so you can see them in action before buying.

  • Q&A Forums: A space for potters to ask questions, share tips, and troubleshoot together.

We believe that when potters support each other, everyone creates better art.

Yes, we stand behind the quality of the products we sell. Kilns come with a manufacturer’s warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship for 1 to 3 years, depending on the brand. Pottery wheels are covered for 1 to 5 years for defects in the motor and mechanical components. Tools and accessories have warranties ranging from 30 days to 1 year for manufacturing defects. Warranties do not cover wear and tear from normal use, damage from improper installation or misuse, kiln elements and thermocouples which are considered consumables, or damage during shipping which should be filed as a claim with the carrier. For warranty claims, contact us at warranty@blackstoneceramics.com with your order number, photos, and a description of the issue.

For beginners, we highly recommend starting with stoneware clay. Stoneware fires at cone 5 to 6, which is approximately 2,200 degrees Fahrenheit. It is forgiving, versatile, and less prone to cracking than porcelain, making it great for both hand-building and wheel throwing. Earthenware is another option that fires at cone 04 to 06, approximately 1,900 degrees Fahrenheit. It is easy to work with but more porous, so it is best for decorative pieces rather than functional dinnerware. Our top beginner picks include standard stoneware for all-purpose use like mugs, bowls, and plates, buff stoneware for its smooth texture and excellent glazing properties, and red earthenware for a traditional, rustic look. As a beginner, start with a 25-pound bag of stoneware and practice throwing and trimming. Once you are comfortable, experiment with porcelain or specialty clays. Check out our Clay Guide or contact us for personalized recommendations.

Proper maintenance extends the life of your equipment and ensures consistent results. For your pottery wheel, clean the wheel head after every session to remove clay residue and prevent buildup. Lubricate moving parts monthly using manufacturer-recommended oil or grease. Check the drive belt tension quarterly and replace it if loose or cracked. Inspect the electrical cord monthly for fraying or damage. Deep clean the splash pan weekly to prevent clogging and odors. For your kiln, vacuum the interior after every 5 to 10 firings to remove dust and debris. Inspect the elements monthly for signs of wear or breaks. Check the thermocouple quarterly and replace it if readings seem inaccurate. Calibrate the digital controller annually to ensure accurate temperature control. Replace kiln wash on shelves as needed to prevent glaze drips from sticking. Watch for warning signs like unusual noises from your wheel or kiln, longer firing times than usual, inconsistent temperature readings, or sparks and burning smells. If you notice any of these, shut off the equipment immediately and contact us. We also sell maintenance kits and replacement parts in our Parts and Accessories section.
