Details
The Skutt KM-1022-3 is a high-capacity, top-loading electric ceramic kiln designed for users who need both a tall firing chamber and improved insulation. The “-3” indicates its 3-inch-thick insulating firebrick, which provides better heat retention than the standard 2.5-inch-brick KM-1022. It has an approximately 22” × 22” × 22” firing chamber, giving about 5.25 cubic feet of usable capacity, and is rated to Cone 10 / 2,350°F (1,288°C). The chamber is tall enough to accommodate pieces such as large vases while maintaining appropriate clearance.
The 240V single-phase version operates at 48 amps and 11,520 watts and uses a NEMA 6-50 receptacle. Skutt’s specification lists a 60-amp breaker and 6 AWG copper wire for this configuration. The kiln has a substantial electrical load, so installation should be carried out according to local electrical requirements by a qualified electrician.
The kiln uses the Skutt KilnMaster digital controller, which provides automatic firing control through ConeFire Mode and Ramp/Hold Mode. The controller can store and run customized firing programs, allowing the operator to control heating rates, target temperatures and holding periods. The current-sensing system also monitors electrical performance under load, providing diagnostic information that can help identify problems with voltage, amperage or heating elements.
For convenience and maintenance, the KM-1022-3 uses sectional construction, allowing individual sections to be separated for easier transportation and servicing. It also includes Skutt’s spring-loaded Lid Lifter, which assists with opening and closing the large kiln lid. The combination of 3-inch insulation, 5.25 ft³ capacity, Cone 10 capability and programmable KilnMaster control makes the KM-1022-3 a substantial kiln for studio, educational and professional ceramic firing. The listed shipping weight is approximately 298 lb (135 kg).
